Mr. Wally Cox, Superintendent of Schools for the Highlands County School District, was chosen as Florida’s 2012 Superintendent of the Year. The announcement was made on December 1, 2011 at a luncheon in his honor at a joint meeting of the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) and the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS) in Tampa.
“Wally Cox is an exceptional educational leader who represents all Florida superintendents with professionalism and dignity,” states FADSS Chief Executive Officer Bill Montford. “Wally is highly respected throughout Florida and very deserving of this award,” added Montford.
Prior to becoming Highlands County superintendent in 2000, Cox served as the Director of Finance and Planning in Highlands County Florida for 24 years.
Cox served as FADSS President in 2010 and now serves as Vice President. He is a member of multiple committees and task forces for the Superintendent’s Association. He is also a member of the Florida Association of School Administrators, Highlands County Administrators’ Association, and numerous community organizations.
“Wally Cox is an exemplary superintendent and works hard each and every day to make his school district a leader in all areas of operation,” stated Montford. “He cares about all students and truly is the epitome of a servant leader,” adds Montford. “This recognition is a fitting way for his colleagues to acknowledge his dedication, hard work and selfless service to public education in Florida.”
The process for electing Florida’s Superintendent of the Year was established by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), a national organization of school superintendents and other educational leaders. In February 2012, Cox will represent all Florida superintendents at the AASA’s National Education Conference in Houston, Texas where he will be recognized and honored for his service.
